How often is a person allowed to tan at Asian Sun Tanning Studio?

Law mandates that a person must have a minimum of 24 hours between tanning sessions.

What is photosensitivity?

Safety is our #1 concern at Asian Sun Tanning Studio. Certain chemicals and drugs that by themselves are not damaging to the skin can cause undesirable reactions when exposed to UV. If you are taking any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, please inform the Spa Associate.  If it is questionable as to whether or not it is something that can cause photosensitivity, we will not allow you to tan without checking with your doctor or pharmacist. Always be sure to consult your doctor before tanning if you are on any medication that you may believe to cause photosensitivity.

What are these white spots?

There are a few reasons why white spots become noticeable on the body once the tanning process begins.  Typically, white patches of skin on the shoulder blades, elbows and just above the buttocks are caused by the pressure from the body as it reclines on a hard acrylic surface.  This pressure inhibits the flow of blood through that area of the skin.  Since blood carries oxygen and oxygen is essential to the tanning process, this area does not tan.  Periodic body shifting during tanning or tanning in a stand-up unit will tan these spots.

Can indoor tanning lotions be used outdoors?

Yes. Most indoor lotions are designed for indoor and outdoor use.  However, most indoor products do not contain a sunscreen or SPF which is recommended for outdoor tanning.  An SPF lotion may be layered with an indoor lotion.

Can outdoor tanning lotions be used indoors?

No.  Most outdoor tanning lotions have a mineral oil base that will damage the acrylic in the bed.  No outdoor tanning products are allowed at Asian Sun Tanning Studio.

Must protective eyewear be worn while tanning indoors?

Yes and it is extremely important.  The FDA requires that protective eyewear which meets its transmission specifications be made available and supplied to each indoor tanner.  Overexposure to UV light can cause cataracts to form over a period of time as well as causing night blindness and retina burns.  The protective eyewear we provide blocks 99.9% of UVB light and 99% of UVA light.

Will tanning change the color of my hair?

Dyed or natural, with frequent tanning hair can potentially lighten to some degree.  If you have a concern with this, we recommend wrapping your hair in a towel during the tanning session.

Do I need to protect my tattoo?

Yes.  UV exposure can fade the coloring of a tattoo so we recommend covering any tattoo with a good sunscreen or a lip balm with sunscreen.
